๐Ÿ“ฑ How to become a node

That old phone
is a revolution.

Doc Strange here. I've been a travelling shaman for 30 years. I carry almost nothing. And I've just figured out how to carry a whole community in my pocket โ€” using a phone that was gathering dust in a drawer. Let me show you.

Somewhere in your house there's a phone doing nothing. You're about to turn it into a FeelFamous node โ€” a walking WiFi library that broadcasts to everyone within range, works with no internet, costs nothing to run, and belongs to no platform.

No technical knowledge needed. Five minutes. That's it.

"The internet was supposed to be decentralised. We let it get centralised. We can route around that โ€” one old phone at a time." โ€” Doc Strange, Bristol 2026

What you need

๐Ÿ“ฑ
An old Android phone Any Android will do. No SIM needed. Doesn't need to be fast. Just needs to turn on and connect to WiFi for setup.
๐Ÿ”‹
A powerbank Any size. Even a small one runs a node for hours. Plug it in and forget about it.
๐Ÿ“ถ
WiFi โ€” for setup only Just for downloading the app and the files. After that, no internet. Ever. The node is fully self-contained.
โฑ๏ธ
Five minutes Genuinely. We timed it.

The setup โ€” step by step

Download the basecamp files

On the old phone, connect to WiFi and download the basecamp zip. Everything is in one file.

โฌ‡ Download feelfamous-basecamp.zip

Your phone will offer to unzip it automatically. Do that. It creates a folder called feelfamous-basecamp.

Move the files into place

Open your file manager. Find the feelfamous-basecamp folder (usually in Downloads). Move it to Internal Storage and rename it basecamp.

Structure needed: Internal Storage โ†’ basecamp โ†’ index.html. The files need to be at the root of that folder, not buried inside another subfolder.

Install the server app

Open Play Store. Search HTTP File Server. Install the one by Slowscript. Free.

Open the app. Tap the folder icon. Navigate to Internal Storage โ†’ basecamp. Select it. Hit Start.

The app shows an IP address when running โ€” something like 192.168.x.x:8080. Screenshot it. You'll need it in step 5.

Name your hotspot FeelFamous

Settings โ†’ Network โ†’ Mobile Hotspot. Turn it on. Change the name to FeelFamous. Remove any password โ€” leave it open. This is intentional. The whole point is that people can connect.

Keep HTTP File Server running in the background while the hotspot is on.

Make the QR code

On another device connected to your FeelFamous hotspot, open a browser and go to:

http://[your IP]:8080/files/qr.html

Paste in: http://[your IP]:8080/files/index.html โ€” generate the QR, save it. That's what people scan to go straight into the basecamp.

The IP can change when you restart the phone. Check the app each time and regenerate the QR if it's different.

Plug in the powerbank. Walk into a crowd.

Phone in your bag. Powerbank plugged in. Hotspot on. Server running. Done.

People nearby see FeelFamous WiFi. They connect. They scan the QR. They land on the basecamp. They can become nodes too. The fire spreads.

You don't have to do anything. You just have to show up.

โœ“ You're a node now.

Every person who connects can become a node too. The files are on the basecamp โ€” they can download the zip and set up their own phone. Peer to peer. No platform. No extraction. Just people, passing the fire along.

"I spent 25 years appearing to fail. What I was actually doing was training. Learning every trap. Building scar tissue. Developing an instinct for what works when the algorithm doesn't care about you. This is what it was all for." โ€” Doc Strange, April 2026

Troubleshooting

App can't see my files
Settings โ†’ Apps โ†’ HTTP File Server โ†’ Permissions โ†’ Allow management of all files.
Browser shows a / with nothing in it
Go to the full URL: http://[IP]:8080/files/index.html
IP has changed since last time
Check HTTP File Server app for the current IP. Regenerate the QR from qr.html.
People can't connect to the hotspot
Make sure it's named FeelFamous exactly, with no password.
Can't find HTTP File Server in Play Store
Search exactly "HTTP File Server" โ€” developer name is Slowscript.
